With SARANKCO: Creative Studio clientele as the target audience, our team aimed to create a portable, eye-catching, and friendly neighborhood guide that could introduce visitors to all the best restaurants, museums, landmarks, and local transit that NOMAD has to offer. The form-factor is meant to sit in-office, as a physical souvenir that can be given after presentations or office tours. Our goal is to not only highlight SARANKCO favorites, but showcase small businesses as well.
After considering several form factors including QR codes with web landing pages, small postcards, and fully developed pages and spreads, we chose a bi-fold pamphlet for it's compact size and printing ease. We used the SARANKCO visual identity in color palette, fonts and type treatment, and motifs. We approached this assignment through an illustrated map, featuring dimensional icons that would represent our chosen locations, public transit, and of course the SARANKCO office on Broadway.
Madison Square Park was a crucial feature of interest. Restaurants, buildings, and landmarks are represented by mono-line illustrations that pop up similarly to board game pieces.
To represent the area of Broadway that is closed off from traffic and also to add humor and levity to the map, I included cafe-enjoying rats. In similar New-York-fashion, all citi-bike locations are represented by bike-riding pidgeons.
Before finalizing our look, we tried with several styles of illustration, layout, map design, and writing voice. My team, graphic designer Tae Anne, copywriter Brandon Marcia, and I developed several early guides and visuals. Some of my initial illustration ideation is shown below:
Special thank you to my talented teammates, our client partner Fletcher Kirby, design mentors Lila Kydd and Kristen Morici, and the wonderful Mr. Steven Rank.
